Mark Hurd is in talks with Oracle

According to a report in the wall Street Journal, Mark Hurd may work for Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. Last month, Hurd resigned unexpectedly from Hewlett-Packard and now he is in talks with Oracle. It's not clear what position he might take and this move could make a sense for Oracle.

JavaOne conference without Google

Google announces that the company won't be able to present at upcoming JavaOne conference. The conference is being held in San Francisco the week of September 19. Oracle, a sponsor of JavaOne conferece, is suing Google for patents and copyrights infringement related to Java and open source has made it impossible to freely share out thoughts about the future of Java and open source generally. It is really painful for Google, because they’ve participated in every JavaOne since 2004.

Oracle Fixes Eclipse's Java Problem

Oracle reacted swiftly to the issues involving the rebranding of the Java 6u21 update. Since then, Oracle have re-spun the Java install, and for Windows machines, the released build is now 1.6.0_21-b07; since the problem only affected Windows, the Solaris and Linux versions remain at 1.6.0_21-b06. Oracle should be commended for reacting to, and solving, the problem so quickly.

Apache FOP 1.0 released

On Wednesday, the Apache Foundation announced the release of Apache FOP 1.0, a project that has been a decade in the making. Apache FOP, or Formatting Objects Processor, started off its life in the XML project at Apache before moving (together with Batik, a Java-based SVG renderer) to the XMLGraphics project back in 2004.

NetBeans 6.9 Release Supports JavaFX

Oracle has released version 6.9 of its popular open-source Neteans IDE. This is also the first release of the IDE to be released under Oracle's stewardship. The new release has a couple guiding themes providing an umbrella for a raft of new features, as well as many improvements.

Eclipse Helios Simultaneous Release

The Eclipse foundation announced the release of Eclipse Helios, bringing 39 different projects to the same station for the seventh annual release train. The Eclipse projects are managed in an agile fashion, releasing seven milestone builds throughout the year and then a number of release candidates in the weeks leading up to June each year.

EGit 0.8 Ready For Helios Release

The EGit and JGit Eclipse projects released 0.8.1 of their namesake projects earlier this week, in preparation for the Eclipse Helios simultaneous release that is due later this month. The New and Noteworthy for both EGit and JGit have been brought up to date, and a User Guide based on contributions from the Eclipse Wiki. There's also an Introduction to Git for those who haven't used it before.

OpenFaces 3.0 Prerelease, JSF2.0 Compatible

Last month TeamDev had announced the pre release of OpenFaces 3.0. The official release of the 3.0 version is expected in June later this year. This intermediate milestone is a JSF 2.0 compatible version of OpenFaces. The new 3.0 release extends the existing library functionality with 6 new components.

Flex 4 SDK and Flash Builder 4 Released

After many months in beta, the Adobe Flex developer team has released the final version of the Flex 4 SDK and Flash Builder 4 (formerly Flex Builder). While the Flex SDK is available for all platforms, Flash Builder 4 is currently only supported on Windows and Mac OS X. The Flex SDK is free to download and use without cost, while Flash Builder is available on a trial basis and requires purchase.

EGit Eclipse Git plug-in released

The first public version of the org.eclipse EGit plug-in version 0.7.1 has been released at EclipseCon. EGit is based on the pure Java implementation JGit, which means that it has no external dependencies or native code requirements; something which has historically hindered the adoption of Eclipse's Subversion support.

Myriad tool converts Java apps for Android

Mobile software company Myriad Group announced J2Android, which will make it possible for Java-based mobile applications to run on Android-based phones, the company said on Monday. The J2Android tool converts existing Java applications, including games, to run on Dalvik, which is the virtual machine used on all Android devices. Besides converting the application, J2Android will let the application be rescaled to fit the screen of the Android device, according to Simon Wilkinson, CEO at Myriad. It can also add softkeys, if the original application was developed for phones with a numerical keypad, Wilkinson said.
