Starting a new job.
Your first day at work will be full of new faces, information and impressions. Try to get and remember as much as possible and… listen more, talk less.
1. Until you get to know the proper dress code for your position it is better to dress more smartly. However, make sure to wear clothes and shoes you feel comfortable in. It is not worth it to look smart if everybody around you can see that you are suffering.
2. Listen and observe more, talk less. Since everything will be new for you from the beginning and you might not be familiar with working methodology it is not good to criticize the system of work or anything else.
3. Careful of jokes and comments of any kind.
4. Try to remember those colleagues that had already been introduced to you. Make notes if necessary.
5. Ask your boss for detailed job description and areas you are responsible for so as to know what are you expected to do and what are your competences and responsibilities.
6. Do not hesitate to ask questions. It is better to ask at the beginning rather than asking after something goes wrong. Questions indicate that you are interested in your job. It is better to ask for information at the beginning or even asking twice than screwing up due to lack of information.
7. Get to know the corporate culture and identify with it. If you have any difficulties with it, try at least not to concentrate too much attention on the fact that you are not accepting it.
8. Try to be helpful. This will show you are a team player.
9. Avoid being too competitive. This can give negative signals to your associates. They might feel threatened or think that you want to make them look bad or incompetent. It’s good to take care of your tasks without making others look too bad or too good.
10. Be nice and friendly to everyone. Working environment brings together people of different personalities, characters, education, empathy and interests. Even if normally these people wouldn’t be friends they have to coexist at work. Tolerance and empathy help us to cooperate as team members and mutual respect is crucial for good working atmosphere.
Good luck adopting to all new conditions and coexisting together with your colleagues in friendly atmosphere!
